Antique coin banks on display in Norwich

George W. Strouse, trustee and retired chief financial officer of Chelsea Groton Bank, has donated his collection of antique "auxiliary" coin banks to the company where he started his banking career in 1967.

Coin banks were first introduced in the 1800s. The bank provided depositors with a numbered coin bank at no charge. The number was then recorded on the customer's account record. Customers had to bring the coin bank into the bank for the teller to unlock it and to deposit the money into their account.

To view the coin bank collection, visit Chelsea Groton Bank at One Franklin Square in Norwich, where it is on display.
