The Day's May 8 article, "Biden spotlights administration rift on gay marriage" is not entirely on target. Behind closed doors, I'm confident there was no rift. But crawling back from the Great Recession (would have started with a D if President Obama hadn't courageously saved the American auto industry) has made our president's re-election chances dicey so Obama coming out of the closet in support of the emotionally charged gay marriage issue is a real sign of the times for everyone. Whereas eight years ago, the George W. Bush campaign strategy was to use this wedge issue to get an undeserved four-year return to the White House, our current president feels his support of this issue will actually help him get re-elected. It is in our overwhelming best interest to prove him right.
