The Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe has unveiled preliminary plans for a resort casino in southeastern Massachusetts.
The Martha's Vineyard-based tribe told a meeting of local residents Tuesday night that it hoped to build a 145,000-square-foot casino and 150-room hotel at one of two potential sites off Route 140, one in the town of Lakeville and the other in Freetown.
The state's new casino law gives exclusive rights to a federally recognized Indian tribe to negotiate a casino agreement by July 31. But state officials contend the Aquinnah gave up any future rights to gaming in a 1980s land agreement.
