Republican Neil Nichols Sr. of Essex, who narrowly won his party’s endorsement for the 33rd Senatorial District on May 14, announced Friday that he will step aside to allow Art Linares to run as the candidate for the seat.

Democratic state Sen. Eileen Daily, D-Westbrook, who currently holds the seat, will retire at the end of her term.

Nichols had expected a primary challenge from Linares, whom he edged out for the nomination in a 24-22 vote.

In a press release, Nichols said that when he decided to run for the seat, he told his committee and family that he would step aside if another capable candidate decided to run for the seat.

“Art has the innovative spirit, common sense and intelligence we need in our state government,” Neil said.

The district includes half of Old Saybrook, Lyme, Westbrook, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Chester, Haddam, East Haddam, Portland, East Hampton and Colchester.
