I can't believe The Day did the excellent feature on the Salt Meadow Wildlife Refuge in Westbrook, "From forest, to field, to fen," (May 6), but made it sound as though Stewart McKinney was responsible for its creation.
Actually, McKinney was a congressman from Fairfield County who perhaps never set foot in Westbrook. It was Ester Lape who donated her home and most of the land that makes up the Salt Meadow Wildlife Refuge. And Lape's good friend, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, was a frequent visitor in the 1940s and 1950s and, in fact, wrote many of her "My Day" syndicated newspaper columns and parts of her several books there.
