Let's build submarines for other countries

Twenty six years ago, I was interviewed by a very talented Day staff reporter. John Foley's thoughtful questions were related to Electric Boat design and construction. After identifying EB's accomplishments and outstanding talents in design and construction area, I turned the conversation to design and construction of submarines for foreign countries. Staying well within confidential and security guidelines, we successfully accomplished this in the 1960s for the country of Peru.

Not long after this article was written, Taiwan was looking to the United States to design and build submarines, without success. Fast forward to 2012. Israel employs Germany to build two submarines.

If we still have restrictions in place, shouldn't we energize our representatives in Washington to have them removed? All we hear from our politicians is, "It's all about jobs," and all they do is talk a good game without results and with good salaries. Nobody does it better and this should be our work.
