Retired master chief to present Battle of Midway program

Waterford — Retired Master Chief Radioman Deen Brown will present a program on the Battle of Midway on June 16 at the Waterford Pubic Library in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the World War II Battle of Midway.

The battle, a major victory over the Imperial Japanese fleet, was a turning point for U.S. forces. Brown participated as a crew member on the USS Trout (SS-202), a Tambor-class submarine that served in the Pacific from 1941 to 1944.

The Trout left for its 11th war patrol in February 1944. Brown, who had made eight war patrols, was not on board, having been sent to school. It encountered a Japanese convoy and managed to sink one transport ship and damage another before it apparently was sunk by Japanese destroyers. The Trout, with 81 crew members, was presumed lost April 17, 1944.

The program at the library, 49 Rope Ferry Road, will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. A question and answer session will follow the formal presentation.
