Local roundup: Wattely, Sullivan at top seeds at New England track meet

Saco, Maine - Montville senior Shatajah Wattely and Norwich Free Academy senior Allison Sullivan are the top seeds in their respective events in the New England Interscholastic Track Championships today at Thornton Academy.

Wattely has the fastest time in the 100 meters, winning the State Open last week in 12.24 seconds. Her stiffest competition is expected to come from Nicole Kirk of Scarborough, Maine, and Mollie Gribbin of South Burlington, Vt., who are seeded second and third, respectively, both at 12.25.

In the 200, Wattely is the sixth seed.

Sullivan is the athlete to beat in the pole vault. Her winning height at the State Open was 11 feet, six inches. Casey Teska of Nashoba, Mass., also cleared 11-6 and Jacilyn Briggs of Keene, N.H., is the No. 3 seed at 11-5.

Ledyard will be represented by sophomore Chenoa Sebastian (16th, 100 hurdles) and junior Kylie Fustini (11th, discus). NFA is sending junior Erin Schaeffer (32nd, high jump) and junior Briana Lenehan (12th, 800).

Montville is seeded 17th in the 4x100 relay and NFA is eighth in the 4x400.

In the boys' competition, State Open champion Tyler Latham of Fitch is seeded sixth in the javelin. East Lyme junior Kevin Foster, who finished second at the State Open, is the 10th seed.

In the relays, NFA is seeded ninth in the 4x800. Waterford is ranked 10th in the 4x100.

Fitch freshman CJ Alumbres (ninth, triple jump), Griswold junior Adam Rock (20th, shot put) and Old Saybrook junior Nick Sumby (15th, pole vault) also are competing today.

NECBL

• The Mystic Schooners dropped their New England Collegiate Baseball League season opener at Danbury, 7-3. Danbury scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Mystic scored an unearned run in the fourth on Blaine Lerynski's sacrifice fly and added two more in the seventh on Bob Cook's two-run single.

The Schooners were out-hit, 11-7. Starting pitcher Jose Lopez took the loss, allowing six runs in four innings.

American Legion

• Luke Foster pitched six shutout innings, leading Ledyard-Pawcatuck past Willimantic, 5-0, in Zone VI action. Nate Story had two hits for Ledyard, which scored three runs in the third and two in the fifth inning.

SEC Babe Ruth

• Phil Whittle pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine, in Mystic River Marina's 4-1 win over Tri-County Thursday in Southeastern Connecticut 16-18 Babe Ruth. Gage Webber scored twice for Mystic.
