As a former teacher of 37 years' experience, I can honestly say, "Am I glad that I am not teaching today."
What the Malloy reform package means is simply more hoop-jumping for the teachers. It removes responsibility from the students and enters the realm of the blame-game. It is everyone else's fault if a student doesn't achieve.
Commonly accepted and researched-back data reasons for non-achievement are the individual himself (God given-ability), home/parental/social environment-values (motivation), class size, and administrative support in problem-disciplinary cases. Some of our well-intentioned "all inclusive" policies also undermine the best teaching strategies.
Our governor seems to bear a grudge against teachers. Did some teacher somewhere along the line in the governor's schooling career hurt his self-image or blunt his self esteem? It seems we have a Mme. Defarge in Hartford in charge of educational policy.
