Debt-collection scam making the rounds

A new scam to defraud citizens is becoming "increasingly common in Connecticut," according to state Banking Commissioner Howard F. Pitkin.

People posing as debt collectors are calling consumers demanding repayment of debts and threatening them with legal action, including the issuance of arrest warrants.

Pitkin said his department fields about 40 calls a month complaining of the practice. Scammers typically target people repaying "payday" loans.

For more information or assistance, contact the Department of Banking's Consumer Affairs Division at (860) 240-8170 or 1-800-731-8225. Complaints may also be filed on-line, at www.ct.gov/dob.
