Groton — A witness prevented any more extensive damage from occurring at a house on High Street in the City of Groton Friday night after a fire there.
Police Sgt. Mike Masucci said police and fire officials went to 33 High St., a three-floor apartment house where flames were blazing from floor to ceiling in the first-floor foyer. The fire was reported around 8 p.m.
Masucci said a witness found a baby carriage filled with clothes on fire in the hallway and threw the carriage outside onto the sidewalk. Masucci said a woman and her 4-year-old son got out of the building safely.
He said the City of Groton assistant fire chief was at the scene investigating the incident.
The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance to any displaced residents. It was unclear how many residents were displaced.
