Comedy-rock is very much an aesthetic choice - and that I once saw an adult man wearing a Weird Al T-shirt in a completely sincere fashion demonstrates that the loons are winning.
Still, if you like music with a punchline, Tenacious D can bring it. The duo - Jack Black and Kyle Gass, who might more amusingly have called their group Black Gass - cleverly appropriate all sorts of hard rock dynamics, cliches and rhythms. On their latest album, "Rize of the Fenix," Tenacious D deftly clip tasty chunks of Queen, Zep, Meat Loaf, Guns 'N Roses and even Tears for Fears, and manage to duct-tape together some pretty damned good (and funny) songs. And, frankly, Black is a great rock singer.
On tour, they're appearing as a full five-piece group, and they perform Tuesday in the Mohegan Sun Arena.
