It is of interest to note the closing of shoreline beaches due to the frequency of poor water quality particularly after a heavy rainfall. To be truthful, I am not aware of the criteria concerning poor water quality which requires state officials to close the beaches for safety or health reasons.

Run off pollutants are most likely the probable cause, however, seawater is a great deterrent, most pathogens cannot survive this harsh environment and dilution with tidal action certainly must be a major consideration in the early elimination of most probable pollutants.

Poor water quality criterion should best be defined as something more drastic than merely increased numbers of bacteria, otherwise the consumption of raw seafood should be banished, the bacterial counts of these foods must be astronomical, yet we survive.

Health concerns present in seawater of toxic chemicals, human pathogens, and improper particulates would more clearly describe poor water quality in order to clearly close area shoreline beaches.
