Depending on your own definition of a sparkling aesthetic, "An American Classic" might be anything. (Are you listening, any Whataburger or White Castle marketing folks who want to move into New London?) Then there are the canvases of Chet Reneson, one of the nation's most respected painters of sporting art. Whether as an illustrator for the Audubon Society or doing the covers of publications such as Sports Afield or Gray's Sporting Journal, Reneson's body of work is individually and cumulatively classic (as per "Pierce Pond Mountain," shown here).
An exhibit of his paintings bows with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Cooley Gallery, 25 Lyme St., Old Lyme. Show runs through Aug. 11. Hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues.-Sat.; (860) 434-8807, cooleygallery.com.
