Norwich Public Utilities wants customers to be aware of a phone scam from callers, claiming to represent the utility.
The schemers are asking for utility payment information. In some cases, the caller will claim to be from a different utility company.
“The caller mentions the customer’s payment didn’t clear, and tells the customer they need to provide payment information over the phone,” said Kerri Kemp, Division Manager. “While we may make occasional courtesy calls to inform customers of account issues, it is NPU’s policy not to contact customers via the telephone to request financial information for payments.”
Customers receiving phone calls from anyone claiming to represent the utility should ask for the caller’s name and a phone number to call back and verify the call is legitimate. Do not provide any financial information.
NPU’s customer service center can be reached at (860) 887-2555.
