• Fitch freshman CJ Alumbres was the ECC champion in the triple jump (43-2) and won the Class L title (43-4) on his final leap. He also finished sixth in the State Open. He was named "best in field" for Fitch. Alumbres is an honor student.
• Griswold senior Brian Beckwith was the ECC champion in the 300 hurdles (40.32) and fourth in Class M for the ECC Small Division champion Wolverines. He will attend Central Connecticut State University.
• Fitch senior John Coleman earned All-ECC honors in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and in the 4x100 relay, helping the Falcons to the league championship. Coleman will attend Bucknell University and study mathematics and economics. He is a member of the National Honor Society, was the winner of the Dartmouth Book Award and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This summer, Coleman is working at the June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation in Ashford as a lifeguard/counselor.
• Bacon Academy's Spencer Dimock was the ECC champion in the shot put (47-1) and discus (140-9). Dimock was named MVP of Bacon's indoor and outdoor teams. He was also named to the All-ECC football team as an offensive lineman. He was Bacon's football scholar-athlete and will attend Monmouth University.
• East Lyme junior Kevin Foster had the area's longest throw in the javelin at 186-7, winning the ECC (170-9) and finishing second in Class MM (180-9) and second in the State Open (173-10).
• Waterford sophomore Julio Gil finished fourth in the 200 in the state Class L meet and sixth in the 100. Gil was part of the 4x400 relay team that won the ECC. Gil is an honor student.
• Fitch junior Lexus Gordon helped the Falcons win the ECC title with a victory in the long jump (21-6 1/2). He also was an All-ECC pick in indoor track and played safety and running back for the football team.
• Montville senior Brandon Johnson was the ECC champion in the 110 hurdles (15.56). During the indoor season Johnson set the school record in the 55 hurdles and was second in the State Open, while in the fall he was an All-Area, All-ECC and all-state pick as a wide receiver for the football team.
• Fitch sophomore Tyler Latham was the State Open champion in the javelin (177-2), attended the New England championships and qualified for the nationals, all in his first season competing in the event. He finished second in the ECC and second in Class L, as well. Latham was named the team's Most Valuable Player. He is a high honor student.
• Griswold senior Mark Mackin was the ECC champion in the 3,200 (10:03.65), while also finishing second in the 1,600. Mackin was later fourth in Class M in the 1,600. He will attend Central Connecticut State University. Mackin was the 2011 ECC cross country champion.
• East Lyme senior Ben Shaw was the most consistent high jumper in the area, finishing third in the ECC and fourth in Class MM, both with jumps of 6-0. He tied for eighth at the State Open (5-10).
• Old Saybrook junior Nick Sumby won the Shoreline Conference and Class S state championships in the pole vault, both with leaps of 13 feet. Sumby also finished third at the State Open. He finished third in the conference in the 110 hurdles, second in the 4x100 and was sixth in the State Open in the decathlon. Sumby won the St. Anselm Book Award and academic awards in Spanish and multimedia.
• Old Lyme senior Nick Walker was part of the Wildcats' Class S state champion 4x800 relay team, as well as finishing second in that meet in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600. At the Shoreline Conference meet, Walker was second in the 1,600 and the 3,200. Walker, the Shoreline Conference champion during the fall, was The Day's 2011 Boys' Cross Country Runner of the Year. Headed to Bowdoin, Walker was valedictorian of his class, senior class president and a National Merit commended scholar.
• NFA senior Andrew Weiler was the ECC's 800 champion (1:57.48) and later joined the school's record-setting 4x800 in finishing third in Class LL. Weiler was also eighth in Class LL in the 1,600 and won his team's Most Valuable Player honor. He will attend Central Connecticut State University. Weiler is a two-time All-Area pick in cross country.
• Waterford senior Y-Kim Sheppard, sophomore Bishme Sheppard, senior Dakota Jones and junior Chris Jones won the 4x100 relay in the ECC championship meet, tying the meet record of 43.35 seconds, while Chris Jones, Bishme Sheppard, Y-Kim Sheppard and Julio Gil won the 4x400 in 3:29.36. The 4x100 unit placed third in New England (43.11), second at the Class MM meet and third in the State Open. Y-Kim Sheppard was also named to the All-ECC football team and will attend Worcester State University.
• Norwich Free Academy senior Dan Cardin, senior Derek French, junior Kyle Liang and Andrew Weiler set a school record in the 4x800 relay with a time of 7:59.04, good for third at the Class LL championship. The team was fourth in the State Open and 10th in New England. Liang, also all-conference in cross country and indoor track, was the junior class president, a member of the National Honor Society and athletic leadership council. French graduated from NFA magna cum laude and will attend Central Connecticut State University. Cardin was the ECC champion in the 1,600 (4:28.48) and is NFA's recipient of the Fletcher-Willey Cup Award. He is a member of the National Honor Society who will attend the University of North Carolina and major in pre-pharmacy.
