UPDATED: New London crews free woman after Ocean Avenue rollover

New London – A woman drove her car Tuesday night into two cars parked on Ocean Avenue before her Subaru Forester rolled onto its side.

The New London Fire Department used cutting equipment to extricate the the vehicle's sole occupant from the car, which had New Hampshire license plates. She appeared to be conscious as she was pulled from the wreck and taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Battalion Chief Thomas Curcio said the woman did not appear to have life-threatening injuries but she was placed on a backboard and stretcher as a precaution.

Police on Wednesday identified the driver as 68-year-old Judith Pickering of Nashua, N.H.

Sean Cavanaugh said he was standing outside 229 Ocean Ave., just past Alger Place, around 9 p.m. when he saw the Forester crash into his friend's parked Honda Accord. He said Pickering stopped for a few seconds, Cavanaugh said, before continuing down the roadway. As he chased after the Forester, Cavanaugh saw it hit the second car, a Nissan Altima, about 150-yards down Ocean Avenue and roll over.

Cavanaugh said she was "incoherent and bleeding from her nose" when he ran up to the wreck. He had called 911, as had several other people, he said. The car rolled over between Longview and Sunset streets. Ocean Avenue was closed between Alger Place and Sunset Street for more than 30 minutes as emergency personnel worked to free the woman.

"She wasn't going fast," said Saxon Herbert, who was driving behind the woman when she hit the second car. "She just drifted over, clipped the back tire (of the Altima) and it flipped on its side."

Dee Thornton said she was driving behind the Forester when it went to the side of the road "like she wanted to park, but then hit the car and kept going."

"It was like a slow motion thing," Thornton added. "I was like, 'what is she doing?' It was a strange situation."

The accident remains under investigation.
