Groton — Cmdr. John Gearhart turned over command of the USS Annapolis to Cmdr. Chester T. Parks July 12.

Capt. William Merz, chief of staff to the commander of the submarine force and former commander of Submarine Development Squadron Twelve, spoke at the ceremony.

Under Gearhart’s leadership, Annapolis (SSN 760) received the Deck “D” award for 2010, Battle Efficiency “E” award for 2011, Administration “A” award for 2010 and 2011 and the Supply “E” award for 2010 and 2011. The Los Angeles-class submarine recently returned from a six-month deployment.

Parks, a third-generation Navy sailor, previously served as the fleet readiness officer for the commander of the United States Pacific Fleet.
