Coast Guard band presents big band jazz

New London — The United States Coast Guard Band presents an afternoon of big band jazz on July 29, 2 p.m., in Leamy Concert Hall at the Coast Guard Academy.

The program “Summer Heat” includes a mix of great jazz standards and creative new charts. Musician First Class Megan Weikleenget is the vocal soloist on “How Insensitive” and “Sway,” which was made famous by Dean Martin. The band plays “Such Sweet Thunder,” “Witchcraft” and “St Thomas.”

New music includes a piece by Musician First Class Sean Nelson called “Freaks in Mayberry” and arrangements of “Just Friends” by Musician First Class Cedric Mayfield and “Nardis” by the newest member of the band, Musician First Class Robert Langslet.
