New London — A New London man was arrested Sunday after police said he discharged his gun while he was attempting to move it to another location.

Brian Howard, 31, of 18 Cleveland St., was charged Sunday with unlawful discharged of a firearm, carrying a firearm under the influence, second-degree reckless endangerment, breach of peace, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police said at 9:21 p.m. they responded to 18 Cleveland St. for a report of a trespassing complaint. While conducting an investigation, police learned that Howard attempted to retrieve a firearm that was stored at the residence. While packing the firearm, it discharged, causing a round to penetrate into the floor and through the ceiling of a first-floor bedroom below.

Howard was taken into custody. While speaking to witnesses at 18 Cleveland St., police learned that the firearm was moved to a location on Mountain Avenue. Officers located a black Ruger .22-caliber pistol at the Mountain Avenue location and determined that it had been reported stolen from a residence in Wallingford.

No one was injured during the incident.
