Double in the seventh inning scores Turgeon

Groton — Blaise Lezynski's (Notre Dame) two-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Mystic's Anthony Turgeon and gave the Mystic Schooners a 3-2 win over the Sanford Mainers in the second game of a New England Collegiate Baseball League Eastern Division doubleheader played before 300 at Fitch High School.

Turgeon (Central Connecticut) had two hits, including a double, with two runs for the Schooners (6-31). Also, winning pitcher Louis Concato scattered five hits over six innings with two earned runs, 10 strikeouts and one walk.

The Mainers are 13-22.

In the first game, Nate LaPointe (Boston College) had two home runs with five RBI and three runs as Sanford routed the Mystic, 16-2.

Sanford hit five home runs.

Andrew Santomauro (Lafayette) went 2-for-3, including a two-run home run, and scored for the Schooners.

Tigers lose to Spikes

• Jacob Stallings hit a game-winning two-run single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning as the State College Spikes beat the Connecticut Tigers, 6-4, in the completion of a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium that was suspended after seven innings Thursday.

Tyler Gaffney went 2-for-3 and scored twice for State College (22-16) and Stallings also had a double, three RBI and a run.

Danry Vasquez had two hits, including an RBI single, and scored for the Tigers (16-22) and Juaner Aguasvivas added a two-run single.

Little League baseball (10-11)

• District 10 champion Mystic had its season ended, falling 6-1 to Coginchaug in the Section II championship game at Newington.

Today's schedule

• Three area teams begin major tournament play today.

The Waterford softball team plays Providence in the Eastern Regional Senior League (15-16) at Worcester, Mass. at 11 a.m.

Mystic softball plays Fairfield in the State Junior League (13-14) best-of-three series at 10 a.m. in Orange.

Montville, the Zone VI champion, begins play in the American Legion state tournament. It faces Oxford at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 6:30 p.m.

The Junior American Legion tournament also begins today and three Zone VI teams have noon games. Norwich hosts Rockville, Niantic is at Cheshire and Ledyard-Pawcatuck is at Danbury South.

Zone VI champion Montville has a first-round bye and hosts the Guilford-Orange winner Sunday at 1 p.m.
