Florida man gets 18 months for Plainfield nursing home embezzlement

A Florida man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Tuesday after he allegedly embezzled more than $800,000 from a Plainfield nursing home that is in bankruptcy proceedings.

Stanley Rodowicz Jr., 57, of Wellington, Fla., was sentenced in New Haven after pleading guilty last year to one count of bankruptcy fraud. His sentence includes two additional years of supervised release.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Rodowicz owned Village Manor Health Care Inc., a 90-bed nursing home in Plainfield. In 2007, Rodowicz filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and until March 2010, the government said, Rodowicz maintained control over the nursing home’s bank accounts, cash, accounts receivable and accounts payable. During those three years, the government said, Rodowicz embezzled $817,212 and falsified the books and records of the nursing home to cover up the theft. Rodowicz has since paid $322,000 in restitution, but a judge ordered Tuesday that he pay an additional $495,212 in restitution.

The nursing home remains in bankruptcy, the government said, and owes creditors approximately $4 million.
