Tiverton, R.I. (AP) — Police say they've arrested a man who was driving 135 mph in a convertible BMW after crossing the Sakonnet Bridge, 80 mph over the speed limit.

The Herald News of Fall River, Mass., reports that 27-year-old Raul Barbosa of Bristol, was arrested Friday on Route 24 in Tiverton.

Sgt. Timothy Panell of the Tiverton Police Department says he watched Barbosa's car come across the bridge, speed up and pass eight cars. A speed gun showed he was going 135 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Barbosa was charged with criminal driving on a suspended license and reckless driving, and was released with a summons to appear in District Court and in the Traffic Tribunal.

Police say they have stepped up efforts to crack down on speeding in the area.
