John T. Hannan Norwich
I am a member of the Roman Catholic Church. I am fed up as well as no longer silent about priest scandals.
Every candidate for priesthood takes vows. I will concentrate on the vow of celibacy. The bishop reminds each candidate of the seriousness of his vows. Celibacy is a free choice.
What is taught (or failed to be taught) in seminary? The priesthood is not a career, rather a vocation. I hope the judge in Rev. Dennis Carey's case can see through the pleas of "addiction" and "help." Carey can seek help outside the church.
Carey, priests cavorting with women, abusing boys, they should all be silenced, defrocked, and dismissed from the priesthood.
Bishop Michael Cote was correct to take immediate action. He must be commended. All such errant men must be turned over to civil authority immediately.
A shortage of priests is not a reason to put up with this scandal. These men must go. Reassigning them to another unsuspecting parish is unconscionable and irresponsible.
