Groton — A motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash shortly before 6 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Gold Star Highway and Cow Hill Road.
The intersection was shut down for several hours as police investigated the scene and awaited the arrival of the medical examiner.
Old Mystic Fire Chief Ken Richards Jr. said the male motorcyclist died at the scene. The driver of the red pickup truck was not injured.
Witnesses said the motorcyclist was heading north on Cow Hill and started to cross Gold Star Highway as soon as the traffic light changed. The witnesses, who were in the second vehicle behind the motorcycle at the stoplight, said the truck came speeding through the intersection heading west and hit the motorcycle, sending it and the rider into the guard rail. The rider was wearing a helmet, they said.
Groton Town police and the Old Mystic Fire Department responded to the scene. The crash site is just up the road from the fire department’s headquarters.
