Italians of the Year to be honored in October

Norwich – The Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee of Norwich will honor a local neurologist who has volunteered to provide medical services to Haiti and the former co-owner of the city landmark Bid’s Tavern restaurant as the group’s Italians of the Year during its annual October Columbus Banquet.

Dr. Anthony Alessi, a neurologist with the William W. Backus Hospital, and Betty Coletti LaFreniere, wife of Bid’s Tavern co-owner Thomas LaFreniere, will be honored at the banquet on Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Groton Inn & Suites. Tickets are $35. The Heritage & Cultural Committee selection committee selects recipients for the annual award who are of Italian descent, have contributed to the progress and betterment of the community and have demonstrated an understanding and belief in Italian culture and heritage and live in the greater Norwich area.
