Local roundup: McComic lifts Waterford past East Lyme in field hockey

East Lyme - Nicole McComic's second-half goal lifted the Waterford High School field hockey team to a 1-0 win over East Lyme Tuesday in an Eastern Connecticut Conference game.

Karalyn Harlow assisted on the goal and Becca Gregoire made 12 saves for Waterford (2-1, 2-0).

Sarah Bond made three saves for East Lyme (1-2, 0-1), which outshot Waterford 12-4.

H.S. girls' swimming

• Delia Terry won the 50 freestyle, Tori Poole the 100 breaststroke, and both teamed with Melissa Vaillancourt and Morgan Felkey to win the 200 freestyle relay as East Lyme beat NFA, 102-80, in the ECC.

Caroline Gonsalves won the diving for East Lyme (2-1, 1-0) and Hanna Pelletier won the 500 freestyle. Also, Meghan Volberg, Ugne Kirvelevicius, Belle Kenny and Xingxin Zhang teamed to win the 200 medley relay.

Emma Buckridge won both the 100 butterfly and 200 IM for NFA (0-2, 0-1), while Jessica Charron won the 100 and 200 freestyle. They also teamed with Stephanie Lefebvre and Chloe Marien to win the 400 freestyle relay.

• Jackie Kokomoor and Grace Moriarty won two events each as Fitch beat Windham/Lyman Memorial 98-66. Kokomoor won the 100 and 200 freestyles, and Moriarty won the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Mikaela Dimaapi, Michelle Campbell, Sarah Ferguson and Maddie Terminesi also won events for Fitch (1-0, 1-0).

• Jessica Hespeler won a pair of events as Ledyard beat Waterford 95-81 in the ECC and season opener for both teams. Hespeler won the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley. Michela Lavin and Marguerite France also won events for Ledyard. Ali McDermott won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for Waterford and teammates Rachel Crawford, Asia Langley and Catherine Ward also won events.

College volleyball

• Wellesley beat Coast Guard 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23 in a battle of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference unbeatens.

Wellesley is 9-0, 3-0.

Keriann Mason had 13 kills and 13 digs, Karen Matic had 27 assists, Kelsey DePorto had 10 kills and six blocks and Samantha Marmolejo had 15 digs for the Bears (5-5, 2-1).

College women's soccer

• Connecticut College played to a scoreless tie with UMass-Dartmouth in a nonleague game. Amy Lowitt made nine saves for Conn (0-2-1), which was outshot 19-9.

UConn trio on Wade Watch list

• UConn's Stefanie Dolson, Bria Hartley and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were all named to the Wade Watch List as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Tuesday. The Huskies lead all schools with three players on the 25-member preseason list. It's the second appearance on the preseason list for juniors Dolson and Hartley.

Dolson averaged a team-high six rebounds last season with 57 blocks. Hartley, a WBCA/State Farm and All-Big East first team pick, averaging 14 points and 3.7 assists.

Sophomore Mosqueda-Lewis, the Big East Freshman Of the Year and Sixth Man Of the Year, averaged a team-high 15 points.

Sinani honored by ECAC

• Mitchell sophomore goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Defensive Player of the Week. He made a career-high 14 saves in an overtime loss against Eastern Connecticut State University last week. ECSU was ranked fifth in New England, but Sinani held the Warriors scoreless through regulation.
