Sources: Charles to be named MVP

Mohegan – Multiple sources have confirmed that Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles has won the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player Award for 2012.

WNBA president Lauren Richie will present Charles with the award tonight during a news conference at Mohegan Sun Arena before Game 1 of the Sun-Liberty Eastern Conference semifinal.

In addition, the Sun's Renee Montgomery will receive the league's Sixth Player Award and Kara Lawson will earn the Sportsmanship Award.

Charles, who won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team last month, set a Sun franchise record this season, averaging 18 points per game. She also won her third league rebounding title in as many years, averaging 10.5 per game.

Charles won the league’s Rookie of the Year Award in 2010.
