Opposition expected to dental office in Mystic

Mystic - A group of residents are expect to oppose plans Tuesday night to build a two-story dental clinic on manufacturing zoned land in front of the Ocean Community YMCA at Masons Island Road and Harry Austin Drive.

The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m at Mystic Middle School on a request by Summit Street Development LLC of New London for a special use permit to construct a 9,290-square-foot building. Opponents though have argued that the building is actually three stories. Plans call for 11 exam rooms and 28 parking spots on the one-acre lot. The lot is non conforming though because it does not meet the 80,000-square foot requirement in the zone.

The YMCA, meanwhile, has appealed the approval of a permit for the project by the Inland Wetlands Commission.

Neighbors are worried about parking, traffic and safety issues, the size of the building, as well as potential impact on wetlands.

The commission had slated three public hearing on the plan this summer. The first was postponed because the project had not yet received the wetlands permit and the next two were postponed after the project engineer became ill.

Because the deadline was approaching to close the hearing, Summit Street Development withdrew the application and resubmitted it, which gave the commission a new 65 days to hold and close the hearing.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
