The three senior captains for East Lyme’s undefeated girls’ soccer team are goalie Allison Stoddard (an all-state point guard in basketball) and fellow defensemen Madison Horner (the Vikings’ All-ECC shortstop in softball) and Lindsay Schneider (an all-league defenseman in lacrosse).

“Coach jokes around and calls Lindsay the rock and Madison the moss,” said Stoddard, who finished with 11 saves in East Lyme’s 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Waterford on Tuesday night in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. “They’re the fastest people on the field. … Just all the seniors, we’ve played together since we were on U10. We’ve grown up together. It’s been great.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt the Vikings (9-0-2, 4-0-2), who lost last year’s leading scorer Kennedy Nickerson (22 goals) to graduation, that three of its most high-profile players are pretty competitive people.

Stoddard, who made several diving saves as well as a full-out leap for a ball over her head late in Tuesday’s game, won a few games for the basketball team last season, too, most notably hitting a shot at the buzzer to beat eventual state champion Bacon Academy at the buzzer in the quarterfinals of the ECC tournament.

Stoddard averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 assists per game for the Vikings to earn Class L all-state honors.

Then there’s Horner, softball’s leadoff hitter and captain. Horner had an on-base percentage of .443 and 15 stolen bases, to go with a team-leading .372 batting average, 20 RBI and 21 runs scored. And Schneider, who led East Lyme’s ECC champion girls’ lacrosse team with 46 groundballs and tied for the lead with 30 takeaways. (Horner’s sister Samantha and Schneider’s twin sister Paige play for the East Lyme field hockey team, which is also within striking distance of first place in the ECC).

East Lyme, which got the game-winning goal Tuesday with six seconds remaining from junior Meredith Moore, still has division games remaining with Woodstock Academy and defending ECC tournament champion Bacon Academy, as well as two games with Norwich Free Academy.

“It’s not over by any means,” coach Rachel Redding said after the Waterford victory, which left the Vikings in first place in the ECC Large. “This just means we have to work that much harder. Any games we play have to be like this; you have to play hard every time you go out.”
