Middletown - Connecticut College struck for two goals just one minute, 25 seconds part in the first half and went on to defeat Wesleyan University 3-1 in a key New England Small College Athletic Conference women's soccer match Tuesday.
Conn (5-6-2, 3-6), which began the day tied for eighth in the NESCAC playoff picture, moved into a tie for sixth with Colby and Trinity. The Camels have one more conference game on Oct. 24 against Amherst.
"We really just stuck together and kept believing in ourselves," Conn coach Norm Riker said.
Conn also ended a four-game losing streak against Wesleyan (5-6-1, 2-6). Aina Torres drilled a 30-yard shot in the 22nd minute and Grace Bilodeau scored 1:25 later off an assist from Astrid Kempainen.
Lily Cannon scored Conn's final game in the 52nd minute.
In other games:
• Marissa Yowell scored 3:13 into overtime to give Elms a 1-0 victory over Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Blazers are 5-8-1, 4-0-1. Kaylee Woodford had four saves for the Mariners (3-7-3, 3-3).
• Mary Hogan's goal with 4:56 left in the second overtime gave Springfield College a 1-0 win over Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Devin Fellman had a big game in goal for the Bears (2-11, 0-7), making 20 saves.
Men's soccer
• Mitchell scored three goals during a three-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat Newbury 4-0 in the NECC. Zachary Simmons scored two of those goals for the Mariners (5-6, 3-1) and Taylor Surette scored the other before Frank Williams added a second half goal.
Volleyball
• Keriann Mason and Leigh Anne Brazier each had eight kills to lead the way as Coast Guard tied a school-record with its 26th straight home victory, a 25-14, 25-15 and 25-21 win over Mount Holyoke in the NEWMAC. The Bears (15-11, 5-2) snapped a three-game losing streak.
• Arianna Thomas had 14 digs and Nicole Terni added 18 assists, but Mitchell was beaten by Newbury 25-22, 25-19 and 25-17 in the NECC. Mitchell is 6-10, 3-3.
Sailing
• Mitchell finished fourth at the Providence College Invite over the weekend. Brown won the event followed by PC and Tufts. Brendan Griffiths and Deborah Lee finished sixth in the A Division for the Mariners while the team of Alex Hering, Alex Bollella and Chelsea Abbenante finished 2nd in B Division.
