Yep, Staples of Westport had 723 yards offense Saturday against Darien.

That number may seem too outrageous to be true. Even Polecat HQ staffers had trouble believing it, but a fellow employee attended the Wreckers' 63-28 romp and confirmed the yardage.

(For the record, Staples ran for 465 yards and threw for another 258.)

We'll have a report on the Wreckers in a few days.

(We're surprised none of the local affiliates have used that title yet.)

Saturday didn't have the same level of wacky as Friday did, but it had its moments.

Greenwich scored nine touchdowns on 11 possessions as it crushed Westhill of Stamford, 63-22.

Brandan Basil and unbeaten North Branford strafed Cromwell, 42-7, improving their chances of winning the Pequot Sassacus. Basil completed 18 of 30 passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns.

Oxford converted a two-point conversion with one minute, 28 seconds left to edge New Fairfield, 22-21, to stay in the Class S race.

Brennen Diaz threw a 55-yard touchdown to Chris Van Kamerik to pull Oxford within a point. Diaz followed with a pass to fullback Jeff Haney for two points.

Diaz completed 16 of 26 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Van Kamerik had nine catches for 265 yards and caught all of Diaz's touchdowns.

Weston quarterback Tyler Hassett helped keep his team afloat in Class S. He shook off his injuries and threw a game-winning 46-yard touchdown pass to Justin Schaffer with 29 seconds left to give his team a 20-15 win over Stratford.

Hassett missed most of the game due to injuries that were kept hush-hush, according to Ryan Lacey of Hearst Inc.

Fellow Class S hopeful Prince Tech of Hartford wasn't as fortunate. Zach Ruscoe kicked a game-winning 20-yard field goal as time expired to give Abbott Tech of Danbury at 17-14 win over the formerly unbeaten Falcons.

St. Paul of Bristol beat Kennedy of Waterbury, 41-0, snapping its 18-game losing streak. It was surprising that the Falcons shut out an opponent as they'd given up an average of 58 points a game.

O'Brien Tech won its first game of the season, 28-0 over Whitney Tech of Hamden. It was also the first win for head coach Nick Aprea, who took over the second-year program this season.

Finally, a special thanks to Bob Barton. He's both the state's foremost authority on state high school football history, as well as a one-man Elias Sports Bureau.

Monsieur Barton did some special research for Polecat, Inc. Saturday and found that Xavier of Middletown tied a state-record in Friday's loony 50-49 win over Hillhouse of New Haven.

Xavier rallied from a 28-point deficit (49-21) in the win.

St. Joseph of Trumbull rallied to beat Bassick of Bridgeport, 37-30, on Oct. 19, 1974. Bassick led, 20-0, after one quarter and 28-0 during the second quarter.

Bacon Academy also had a record comeback in its 48-47 win over Windham on Oct. 2, 2010.
