Smashing Pumpkins in concert at Mohegan Sun

Published November 01. 2012 4:00AM

For ardent fans of Smashing Pumpkins, listening to the band's latest single, "The Celestials," must be a satisfying experience, as it combines the several classic elements that have made Billy Corgan one of the more important songwriters to emigrate from '90s alternative nation.

The single, from the Pumpkins' eighth studio album, "Oceania," starts with some beautifully strummed chords recalling the haunting "Disarm" from the band's 1993 sophomore release, "Siamese Dream," still the best thing the group has recorded.

Then some strings come in, like on "Tonight, Tonight" from 1995's double album "Mellie Collie and the Infinite Sadness."

But the best part is about halfway through, when thick hot slabs of guitar take the song to the chorus.

Plenty of the Pumpkins' fans will undoubtedly be screaming for the '90s hits during Sunday's concert at Mohegan Sun. But they should save some breath for "The Celestials." It's most likely remarkable live.

Smashing Pumpkins, 7 p.m. Sunday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $25; (800) 745-3000, mohegansun.com.
