Democrat Warren beats Brown in Mass. Senate race

Boston - Democrat Elizabeth Warren has been elected to the Senate from Massachusetts in a hard-fought battle against Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

It was the most expensive Senate contest in the nation this year, with the candidates spending a combined $68 million, and one of the most closely watched races.

Warren is a Harvard Law professor and former Obama administration adviser who helped create the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the wake of the mortgage crisis and the meltdown on Wall Street.

She becomes the first woman elected to the Senate from Massachusetts.
