Sen. Joe Lieberman announced the names of 70 students he has nominated for admission to the United States Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine academies for the Class of 2017.

"It makes me hopeful and proud that young adults of such skill and determination wish to serve in our armed forces in such a critical time for our nation's defense," Lieberman, D-Conn., said.

The list includes several local students.

To the Air Force Academy, he nominated Nathan Hausman of Old Saybrook, Michael Hughes of Gales Ferry and Tyler Marr of Niantic. To the Naval Academy, he nominated Katherine Beasley of Voluntown, Connor McMahon of Norwich and Trevor Stefanski of North Stonington. To the Merchant Marine Academy, he nominated Michael Irons of Groton.
