Fitch, NFA play teams ranked in The Day Top 10

Three local high school football teams play CIAC football quarterfinal games tonight with Fitch and Norwich Free Academy playing two of the top-ranked teams in The Day of New London Top 10 state coaches poll.

Eighth-ranked NFA plays at No. 7 Newtown in a Class LL game that should be one of the night's best contests. Both teams are 10-0 and were their respective league's best clubs. NFA won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division title and was the league's only unbeaten team. The Nighthawks won the South-West Conference title for the first time since 1997.

Fitch plays at No. 4 Windsor (9-0). The Warriors have won 22 straight regular season games dating back to the 2010 season. Their only loss during that stretch was during last season's Class L semifinals. They've outscored teams this season by 33 points.

NFA and Fitch (8-2) are the only area teams receiving votes.

Hand of Madison, the defending CIAC Class L champion, remains the number one team and received nine of 13 first-place votes. Staples of Westport (9-0) leapfrogged Ansonia to No. 2 and received two first-place votes.

Ansonia (11-0), the defending Class S champion, is ranked third and received the other two first-place votes.
