Norwich – Two-term Alderwoman Deberey Hinchey will announce plans Tuesday to seek the Democratic nomination for mayor, becoming the first Democrat to enter the race officially.

Hinchey, 60, a clinical social worker for VNA-East in Mansfield, said today she will make her formal announcement at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the law office of her husband, Lloyd Hinchey, at 120 Broadway, about a block from City Hall.

Current Republican Mayor Peter Nystrom’s four-year term is up in November. Nystrom said he is leaning toward seeking re-election, but has not yet made a formal decision.

“I gave it a lot of thought and decided to take the plunge,” Hinchey said.

Fellow Democratic Aldermen Charles Jaskiewicz and H. Tucker Braddock also recently said they were considering running for mayor this fall. Party endorsements will take place in May.

Norwich enacted the mayoral position in 2001 with a charter change that created the four-year position with a salary of $45,000 for a mayor to be in charge of economic development, while retaining the city manager form of government.
