    Local roundup: Conn, CGA hosts Citizens Bank Classic

    The Connecticut College and Coast Guard Academy men's basketball teams will co-host the third annual Citizens Bank Classic today and Saturday in New London.

    Tonight, Coast Guard (1-2) hosts Wheelock College (0-3) at 6 p.m. at Roland Hall, with Conn (1-3) playing the University of Dallas (1-2) at 8 p.m.

    Saturday's action shifts to Conn's Luce Field House with the consolation at 2 p.m., and the final at 4 p.m.

    All four games are free of charge and include free parking at both sites.

    Women's basketball

    • UConn-Avery Point jumped out to a 32-21 halftime lead and went on to beat Gateway Community College 57-46. Mikayla Wells had 18 points, Kim Bouten scored 15 and Ashley Oakes had 13 points for the Pointers (5-3).

    Kolinsky scholarship

    • The Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance will accept applications in February for the 2013 Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship.

    Named for a longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who died in 2003, the scholarship provides the winning applicant $1,500 toward the first year of college study leading to a career in sports journalism. Increased aid is offered for the remaining college years if the student meets certain criteria of progress.
