Two states will charge man involved in alleged abduction, police chase

Stonington — The Lisbon man in custody in Rhode Island after an alleged abduction and motor vehicle chase was charged Tuesday by police in both states.

Daniel Candales, 42, of 187 Ross Hill Road, Lisbon, was involved in a domestic disturbance with his former girlfriend Monday and allegedly abducted her 9-year-old daughter during a custody transfer in the parking lot of the Stonington police station.

Police issued an Amber Alert for the girl and pursued Candales' pickup truck through several towns until he was stopped in Richmond, R.I., and the girl was safely recovered.

On Tuesday, Stonington police charged Candales with risk of injury, reckless driving and breach of peace and were going to file a warrant for his arrest Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Hopkinton police also filed Tuesday, charging Candeles with reckless driving and eluding law enforcement in high speed pursuit.

Connecticut court records show Candales has a lengthy arrest record, including violation of protective orders and restraining orders, stalking and criminal possession of a firearm. He is due in New London Superior Court Monday on those charges.
