New London - Joshua Ford scored a career-high 43 points and added 13 rebounds to power the Mitchell College men's basketball team past Southern Vermont 101-72 Saturday in the New England Collegiate Conference.

The Mariners jumped out to a 44-34 halftime lead. They shot 53.7 percent from the field. Ford converted 19 of 22 field goal attempts overall and scored 27 points in the second half.

Alex Del Rio finished with 13 points and seven assists and Michael Pellegini added 10 points for Mitchell (6-6, 2-2).

In other games:

• Taylor Epley scored 27 points in 26 minutes to help the Williams men's basketball team defeat Conn College 96-63 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Ephs are 14-1, 4-0. Matt Vadas had 23 points and Jared Shill added 14 points for Conn (5-10, 0-4).

• Senior Greg Marshall scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, but Coast Guard was not able to overcome the hot shooting of Clark University, falling 85-64 in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference game. The Bears (1-12, 0-4) shot a season-high 62.5 percent. Senior Jimmy Knudsen tied a season high with eight rebounds.

Women's basketball

• Coast Guard Academy surpassed its win total from last season with a 58-52 win over Mount Holyoke in the NEWMAC. The Bears, who went 5-19 last year, improved to 6-7 overall, 4-4 in the conference.

Junior Kaitlin Ward hit a critical 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to give the Bears a four-point lead. Ward had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists and junior Larla Brown had 12 points.

• Amanda Garcia had a season-high 16 points and 12 rebounds in Mitchell College's 61-54 loss to Southern Vermont in the NECC. Garcia went 12-for-12 from the foul line and Suzie Barbosa came off the bench to score 10 points and Kate Mulloy added a team-best 13 rebounds for Mitchell (1-10, 1-4).

• Tara Gableman led Conn College with 12 points in a 68-43 loss to Williams College in the NESCAC. The Camels fell to 6-9, 1-3.

Men's hockey

• Keith Veronesi and Zach Jones scored short-handed goals 36 seconds apart in the second period, as Conn College rallied to tie ninth-ranked Amherst 2-2 in the NESCAC. Mike Petchonka made 21 saves for Conn (3-6-3, 1-4-3).

Women's hockey

• Samantha Slotnick scored goals in each of the first two periods and added an assist to lead Colby College past Conn College 3-2 in the NESCAC. Amelia Dineen and Shelley Moore scored for Conn (5-7-1, 2-5-1) and Amanda Bogue had two assists.

Men's track

• Ben Wohlhaupter and Thomas Bondurant each won an event and qualified for the Division III New England Championships as Coast Guard placed second in its season-opening Winter Invite.

Rhode Island College won the meet with 127 points, edging Coast Guard's 122 points.

Wohlhaupter took first in the pole vault (14-1.25) while Bondurant won the weight throw at 48 feet, 7.5 inches. Bryan Ayotte won the shot put (41-3) and Adam Scalesse won the 55 hurdles in 7.88 for the Bears.

The 4x400 relay team of Kelcey Smith, James Dawkins, Scalesse and Joe Kelly won in 3:31.99.

Placing second for CGA: Ben Hannon, 400 (51.81); Jordan Lee, mile (4:34.95); James Martin, 3,000 (9:12.58) and Clay Kosack, high jump (5-4.25).

• Junior Michael LeDuc and freshman Niall Williams won their respective events for Conn College, which placed fifth of six teams at the Bowdoin College Invitational.

LeDuc qualified for the New England Division III and Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in the mile, posting a time of 4:21.89. In the 1,000 meters, Williams topped the field with a time of 2:39.78.

Senior Andrew Duarte took second place in the mile in 4:22.12. In the 4x800 meter relay, LeDuc, Brad DeMarco, Williams and Duarte took third in 8:17.28.

Women's track

• Freshman Monet Masters set the school record in the pole vault in her first meet with a vault of 10 feet as Coast Guard won its season-opening Winter Invite, scoring 167 points.

Masters broke the school record of 9 feet, 8 inches set by Betsy Baker in 2003.

Coast Guard's Emily Trudeau won the shot put (37-10.5) while Katie Nielsen took second (37-4.5), as both qualified for the Division III New England Championships.

• Kim Bolick set the Conn College school record in the mile, finishing in 5:13.94 at the Bowdoin College Invitational. She qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC championships. The Camels placed fourth out of six teams.

Conn's Arianna Beers took first in the 5K with a New England qualifying of 18:49.62. In the weight throw, Sam Pevear covered a school-record distance of 40-11.5 and placed third.

Senior Sarah Matthews posted a time of 1:43.45 en route to a third in the 600. In the 4x400 relay, Matthews, Caroline Leonard, Merry Byrne and Bolick took third in 4:25.24.

Men's swimming

Coast Guard had nine first- or second-place finishers, but fell to top-ranked MIT by a 137-91 margin. Sophomore Christian Brindamour (50 freestyle) and sophomore Derrian Duryea (100 breaststroke) were both victorious for the Bears and freshman Andy Anderson led a Coast Guard sweep in the 1- and 3-meter diving.

The Bears (6-2) also had five-second place finishers: freshman Timothy Dion (400 individual medley), senior Kyle Smith (1-meter diving, 3-meter diving), junior Alex Dona (100 freestyle) and junior Marco Tinari (500 freestyle).

Women's swimming

• Coast Guard had six swimmers place in the top two, but lost to No. 5 MIT 164-75. Sophomore Sara Cantrell posted victories in both the 1- and 3-meter diving for the Bears (3-6).

Coast Guard also had four second-place finishers: sophomore Darlene Sao (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), junior Chantel Ferguson (100 butterfly) and freshman Megan Toomey (500 freestyle).

Wrestling

• Coast Guard dropped both of its matches on the second day of the 25th annual Budd Whitehill National Duals. The Bears (2-4) lost to the College of New Jersey 28-14 and Heidelberg 23-14.

Against College of New Jersey, Nate Giorgio and Mike Giorgio registered wins. Nate scored a 10-1 major decision at 133 and Mike had a pin in just 3:22 at 141. Luke Taylor (174) won 11-0 and Mark Howard (heavyweight) won 14-5.

Taylor won by technical fall 18-1 against Heidelberg, while Mike Shermot won by injury default for the Bears. Taylor finished the weekend at 5-0 and Nate Giorgio went 4-0 overall.
