Ledyard - In a showdown between two of the state's top high school wrestling programs, second-ranked Ledyard dropped a 35-34 decision to No. 4 Simsbury on Saturday in the championship match of the Colonel Duals.

The match was decided on a third criteria tiebreaker that came down to an unsportsmanlike call against the Colonels. Simsbury would have won anyway because it had more wins than Ledyard.

"I knew it was going to be close," said Ledyard coach Steve Bilheimer, whose team was previously unbeaten. "I was hoping it wouldn't go in that direction. We did a lot of things right and did more things wrong, which cost us the match.

"Fortunately, it's only mid-season."

Kevin McDonald (285), Joshua Rahal (113), Jeffery Csisar (145), Ryan Wade (170) and Colin Grim (182) registered pins for the Colonels.

Brandon Finney scored a major decision over Tyler Stemm at 152, winning 12-2.

In other matches, Ledyard (9-1) beat South Kingstown (R.I.), Jonathan Law and Avon. Scores were unavailable.

In other matches:

• Montville beat host Maloney 39-29 in the championship match of the Spartan Duals. The Indians (11-1) also defeated Morgan (58-23), East Lyme (67-12) and Fitch (66-5).

Joe Rainville (113), Tommy Wynosky (126), Jake Caskey (132), MacKenzie Mahn (182) and Ryan Murtha (heavyweight) all went undefeated for the Indians.

Montville's Zach Looney (108), Steven Rogers (120), Kyle Looney (138), Ian Concascia (152), Jake Schmalz (160) and Pat Bogan (170) each won three matches.

• Brentt Smith went 5-0 at 113 pounds as Waterford went 2-3 at the Art Powers Duals in Berlin. Justin Lindblom (138) and Dillon McCarthy (160) won four matches each for Waterford (7-10). The Lancers beat Lyman Memorial 61-18 and RHAM 57-15 and lost to Terryville (61-18), Trumbull (56-6) and Berlin (50-27).

• St. Bernard-Norwich Tech-Wheeler's Matt Dowler won all four of his 106-pound matches at the Colonel Duals.

In a 71-6 loss to South Kingstown (R.I.), Dowler pinned his opponent in 35 seconds.

Dowler won by pin in 23 seconds in his team's 54-15 loss to Avon. Victor Calle also posted a win for St. Bernard, earning an 8-3 decision at 138.

In a 75-3 loss to Simsbury, Dowler won by decision, 8-5.

Dowler took 42 seconds to win by pin against Jonathan Law, which won, 60-24. Calle won by pin in 47 seconds and Justin Keating (145) won by pin in 5:56 for the Saints (2-9).

• Fitch beat East Lyme (48-24) and lost to Morgan (63-12), Montville (66-5) and host Maloney (65-12) at the Spartan Duals. Jordan Kenyon was top wrestler for the Falcons (5-15), winning all four of his 160-pound matches, including three by pin.

Bryan Brown (113) won by pin against Morgan and Gabe Madrigal (126) won by pin vs. Maloney while Billy Goff (138) registered a pin against East Lyme.

East Lyme's Jorge Brackett (195) won by pin against Fitch.

Boys' track

• Ledyard's Joseph Carter won the 300 meters at the SCC Coaches' Invitational in New Haven, setting a school record in 34.84 seconds. Carter's time qualified him for the emerging elite class at the national meet later this season. Ledyard was fourth as a team with 33 points.

Also for the Colonels, Carter, Alex Paterson, Steven Servedio and Alex Hintz-Valdez combined to finish second in the 4x200 in 1:33.65. Paterson was fourth in the 300 (36.92), Kevin McCarthy fifth in the high jump (5-8), Servedio sixth in the long jump (19-9) and Jeremy Hintz-Valdez sixth in the pole vault (11-6).

• The Fitch boys competed in the URI Indoor Track Classic. Lexus Gordon placed second (20-10) and Mustapha Noibi was fourth (20-1) in the long jump for the Falcons.

In the 55 hurdles, Luis Crisostomo was second (8.30) and Tyler Latham fourth (8.34) while Randall Rissing took fourth (6.88) in the 55 dash and Lake Wyld was fifth (1:28.45) in the 600.

In the 4x200 relay, the quartet of Rissing, Latham, Noibi and Clifford Randolph placed third (1:36.83) while the 4x400 team of Wyld, Crisostomo, Devin Lehman and Eric Powers took fourth (3:45.10).

Girls' track

• Ledyard's Chenoa Sebastian won the 55 hurdles in 8.78 seconds at the SCC Coaches' Invitational in New Haven, leading the Colonels to a 15th-place finish with 13 points. Austin Graber added a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (9-0).

Fencing

• St. Bernard hosted a quad match, facing Waterford, Bacon Academy and Old Lyme.

Against Waterford, the Saints lost 5-4 in boys' foil. Ben Frascarelli was the high scorer for the Lancers.

In the girls' foil, Waterford won 5-4 with Nicolette Fardon finishing as high scorer. In epee, St. Bernard won both boys (5-4) and girls (8-1). Christian Gospodinoff was high scorer for the St. Bernard boys and Caitlin Wagner and Cassie Meehen led the girls.

Against Bacon, St. Bernard lost the boys' foil event (5-4) and won the girls (6-3). Katelyn Mazurkiewcz and Rachel Rossier were high scorers for the Saints.

Against Old Lyme, St. Bernard won by forfeit in the boys' foil and scored a 6-3 win in the girls' event. Victoria Pecotte was high scorer for the Saints.

In the epee, St. Bernard won 7-2 in the boys' competition and 6-3 in the girls. Gospodinoff and Wagner were high scorers for the Saints.
