    Local roundup: St. Bernard's Rios commits to pitch for Maryland

    Ledyard/Stonington's Adam Tran powers to a first-place finish Thursday in the 100-meter breaststroke, winning the race in 1 minute, 19.29 seconds. Ledyard/Stonington (5-0) won the high school swim meet at Waterford, beating the Lancers 104-77.

    Montville - St. Bernard School junior left-handed pitcher Willie Rios has verbally committed to play baseball for the University of Maryland, according to a press release from St. Bernard athletic director Brendan Case.

    Rios, who has started for St. Bernard since his freshman season when he averaged 11 strikeouts per game, has 169 strikeouts in two seasons. He also hit over .300 in both seasons.

    Dipollino named interim coach

    • Kevin Dipollino was named interim assistant coach of the Stonington High School boys' basketball team and will coach the Bears in tonight's game at Ledyard.

    Dipollino replaces Tim Payne, who resigned for personal reasons Wednesday amid allegations that he directed an inappropriate comment toward a player. Payne was in his first season at Stonington after eight years as boys' coach at St. Bernard.

    A volunteer assistant for the past several years, Dipollino will remain as the team's head coach for the rest of the season, athletic director Bryan Morrone said in a press release. Dipollino's son Jack and nephew C.J. are both juniors on the team.

    Stonington is 7-4 following Tuesday's 58-56 victory over Bacon Academy.

    Said Morrone of Dipollino: "We are confident he can maintain the continuity of the program and its tradition of excellence."

    H.S. wrestling

    • Ledyard won half of the matches by pin as it beat Bacon Academy 58-18 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Rob Drury (113), Devon MarcAurele (120), Justin Timberlake (145), Brandon Finney (152), Callie Johnson (160), Colin Grim (195) and heavyweight Kevin McDonald all won by pin for the Colonels (10-1, 4-0). Matt McAllister (126) and P.J. Sawicki (220) both won by pin for Bacon (11-13, 4-1).

    • Windham had seven pins against Montville in its 53-18 win in the ECC Small. Jacob Schmaltz (160) won by pin for Montville (11-2, 4-1) and Jake Caskey (132), Kyle Looney (138) and Ian Concascia (152) all won by decision.

    H.S. swimming

    • Matt Peluso (200-meter freestyle, 400 freestyle), Collin Esquirol (200 individual medley, 100 freestyle) and Adam Tran (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) won two individual events each as Ledyard/Stonington topped Waterford 104-77 in the ECC.

    Esquirol and Tran were also members of the winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams for Ledyard/Stonington (5-0, 4-0).

    Mike McDermott won diving and Ryan Hessling took the 100 backstroke for Waterford (1-4, 1-3).

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Dan Paul had 16 points to lead Norwich Tech to its first win of the season, 57-45 over Parish Hill in a Constitution State Conference game. Mack Osias had nine points for Norwich Tech (1-6) and Tyriece Burke and Mike Froscello each scored eight.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Allison Stoddard had 20 points and seven assists as East Lyme beat Woodstock Academy 64-35 in the ECC Large. Jenna Schumacher had 15 points and seven rebounds for East Lyme (10-2, 4-2) and Colleen Durkee scored nine.

    • Molly Finnigan scored 18 to lead Parish Hill past Norwich Tech 44-17 in the CSC East. Tyra Wolchesky had nine points, five rebounds and two steals for Norwich Tech (1-11, 0-8) and Elanna Sanon added six rebounds.

    • Trayneice Mims had 15 points as Hyde beat Old Lyme 52-28 in the Shoreline Conference. Hyde is 5-8. Old Lyme is 2-9.

    H.S. riflery

    • Eric Sloan was the high scorer (197) for Montville in its 948-866 loss to Vinal Tech of Middletown. Vinal also beat Grasso Tech 948-847. Tyler Glynn shot a 189 for Montville and Nathan Zawicki shot a 183. Grant Buttermore scored a 185 for Grasso and Dino Broccoli shot a 169.

    Women's basketball

    • Kaylee Cerruto had 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists for Mitchell as it beat Lesley 71-55 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Amanda Garcia had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Mitchell (3-10, 3-4) and Diamond Thomas had 12 points and seven rebounds. Lesley is 1-12, 0-7.

    Men's basketball

    • Matt Gibson scored 26 and Mike Kaufman added 20 points off the bench as Lesley downed Mitchell 80-65 in the NECC. Anthony Mattocks had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for Lesley (5-10, 3-3). Joshua Ford had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Mariners (7-7, 3-3) and Anthony Epps added nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
