Finizio to pay the fee for Shiloh's MLK march

New London - The annual Martin Luther King march from City Hall to Shiloh Baptist Church will be held again this year on Monday, despite a misunderstanding about getting permission from the city for the procession.

Shiloh, which each year hosts an ecumenical service at the church, was unaware of a city policy change mandating that organizations obtain a permit and pay for city services during parades and other events on city property.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio announced Friday afternoon that he took out a parade permit for the march and will personally foot the $800 to $1,000 bill to cover police protection and other city services for the event.

"Shiloh is now on notice (of the policy) and I will assume that next year, it will not happen again, and they will raise the money for the march,'' Finizio said.

The march to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will start at 10 a.m. Monday at City Hall. It will continue up State Street and down Cottage Street to the church.
