Groton — Capt. Vernon J. Parks, commander of Submarine Development Squadron 12, told members of the Nautilus Chapter Naval Submarine League Jan. 18 that innovation is key to keeping ahead of the nation’s adversaries.

Parks gave a short history of the submarine force, from the Navy’s first commissioned submarine to the submarine classes of today. Throughout that history, he said, advances in technology ensured the force had “unfettered access” to the world’s oceans.

“We go wherever he want,” he told the group assembled at the U.S. Submarine Veterans Club.

He updated the group on some of the development squadron’s current projects, which are designed to maintain that access and extend the reach of submarines.
