Providence - John Gabordi, a graduate student from Ledyard, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler after leading Springfield College to its second consecutive New England Wrestling Association Dual Championship on Sunday at Johnson & Wales University.

Springfield, the third seed, trailed No. 1 Wesleyan 18-16 in the championship match when Gabordi, the Pride's heavyweight, beat Austin Finch 2-0 in the final match to give Springfield a 19-18 win and the title.

Gabordi went 3-0 in the tournament, earning a pin in 1 minute, 25 seconds during Springfield's 43-6 win over WPI in the second round, then coming up with an 11-4 decision during the Pride's 24-10 win over second-seeded Johnson & Wales.

College football

• UConn received verbal commitments from a pair skill position players Monday - 6-foot-6 tight end Jordan Fuchs of Christ the King in New York and 5-11 wide receiver Brian Lemelle of Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, Pa.

Fuchs, who also plays basketball, chose the Huskies over Rutgers, according to the New York Post. He had 27 receptions for 374 yards and five touchdowns for Christ the King. He is the fourth tight end, including Tommy Myers of Coventry, to commit. UConn graduated its top two tight ends - Ryan Griffin and John Delahunt.

Lemelle, according to ESPN.com, chose the Huskies over a number of high-profile schools including Iowa, Penn State, Nebraska, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Rutgers. He had 91 catches for 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior and had career totals of 254 receptions, 4,399 yards and 37 TDs.

College honors

• Coast Guard Academy sophomore Sara Cantrell was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Women's Diver of the Week after breaking the school record on the 3-meter board (280.55 points) and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships during the Bears' 142-95 win at Clark on Saturday. Cantrell also won the 1-meter event with 240.40 points.

• UConn forward Breanna Stewart was named Big East Freshman of the Week for women's basketball after averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds during the Huskies' 2-0 week. The 6-foot-4 Stewart had 12 points, five rebounds and three blocks while shooting 71 percent from the floor in a win over No. 4 Duke, then had 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists in a Big East win over Cincinnati on Saturday.
