Osprey nests in need of repairs

The osprey platform nest near the middle of the Ocean Beach parking lot has survived practically unscathed from the ravages of the three major storms that pummeled our region over the last year.

Many other nearby nests were not so fortunate. Their platforms are now in a precarious state. Some have collapsed. Others have much of their wood ripped away, leaving the nests tottering.

It is no coincidence that the platform nest at Ocean Beach is intact. The platform has the size and bulk to support the nest, which can weigh 200 pounds. Other nests are on slim wooden poles but this one sits on a steel lattice attached to a solid concrete base and has withstood hurricanes and flooding.

A preliminary examination of the structure shows several spider cracks in the base, requiring eventual but not imminent repair.
