Groton police investigating assault of East Lyme man

Groton — Town police are investigating the Jan. 28 assault of a 26-year-old Niantic man who was found unconscious in front of Rose’s Cantina on Route 12.

Lt. John Varone said police and emergency personnel responded to the incident at 12:45 a.m. Varone said initially it was not known whether the victim was either assaulted or had fallen. He did not release the victim’s identity.

The victim was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and was subsequently taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital due to the severity of the injuries. An updated condition on the victim was not immediately available.

Varone said police have launched a criminal investigation and are following several leads. No further information is available at this time.
