Chief Petty Officer Strubel to receive 2013 Sulzer Memorial Leadership Award

Groton — Fire Control Technician Chief Petty Officer Richard F. Strubel will receive the 2013 Dennis Sulzer Memorial Leadership Award.

Strubel is the leading chief petty officer for the Naval Submarine School’s Basic Enlisted Submarine School. Rear Adm. Richard P. Breckenridge, commander of Submarine Group Two, said Strubel demonstrated “exceptional leadership and dedication to our sailors and our Navy.”

“He is highly motivated and a superb example of engaged chief petty officer leadership,” Breckenridge said.

The annual award was established in 1996 in memory of a former Submarine Group Two command master chief. The commander of the submarine group selects the recipient and the award is traditionally presented at the Enlisted Submarine Ball.

Strubel directs a division of 22 instructors, who manage 24 classes that graduated 1,700 initial sailors in 2012. During the past year, Strubel served as the volunteer coordinator for the school’s Chief Petty Officer Association.

“I emphasize to students how important it is for our Navy and our nation for ‘normal sailors to always do the right thing.’ I’m proud my sailors know what the right thing is and never hesitate to do it,” he said. “I believe Master Chief Sulzer would be proud of where we are with his Navy and how we’ve made it our Navy.”
