Hygienic Poetry's slam is Saturday

Down South, a "poetry slam" involves the redneck defensive line of a high school football team crashing the Wordsworth Club's fall fundraiser - where all dactylic hexameter is drowned out by screams of pain.

Fortunately, the Hygienic Poets presentation Saturday - part of the Hygienic Art Show's second weekend - is far more civilized. Rhonda Ward hosts an open mic reading followed by a poetry slam proper - an actual competition where poets read or recite original work before a panel of judges selected from the audience.

The event takes place in New London's Hygienic Art Galleries, and the top three Slammers get cash prizes.
