    Local roundup: Elmore heads to CCSU; Paparelli to Bryant

    Jevon Elmore of New London has enrolled for the spring semester at Central Connecticut State and will play football for them next fall, the school announced Wednesday as part of national signing day.

    Elmore, a 5-foot-10 defensive back, attended the United States Military Academy Prep this past fall. He scored 12 touchdowns during his senior season at New London (2011) and had a team-leading seven interceptions.

    "I wanted to bring my talents back home," Elmore told CCSU's athletic website.

    New London senior receiver-defensive back Caleb Camacho signed his letter of intent with Sacred Heart University.

    Norwich Free Academy's Joey Paparelli signed a football letter of intent with Bryant University. He'll play both football and baseball. The co-captain helped lead the Wildcats to both the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division title, the program's second CIAC Class LL final, and a 12-1 record.

    Jaleel Reed of St. Thomas More committed to play receiver at Maine. He had 1,100 all-purpose yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in seven games.

    Women's basketball

    • Meghan Fornaro made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 left in the third overtime as Coast Guard edged Springfield, 55-54, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game.

    Alexi Howard and Kaitlin Ward both scored 12 for the Bears (8-12, 6-9) and Karli Collins had 18 rebounds. Fornaro added 10 pionts.

    Jaimie Bickelhaupt had 24 points and 16 rebounds for the Pride (3-18, 1-14).

    • Connecticut College, celebrating National Girls and women in Sports Day, will host youth girls' basketball teams from Groton and East Lyme Friday night. The teams will play and eight-minute game at halftime of Conn's game against Colby College, which begins at 8 p.m.

    Men's basketball

    • Brian Vayda had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists as Clark trounced Coast Guard, 89-47, in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard missed 11 of its first 12 field goals and shot 31.7-percent for the game. D.J. Bailey had 12 points and seven rebounds for Clark (12-10, 6-3). Jimmy Knudsen (10 points) was the only player to score in double figures for the Bears (1-19, 0-10).

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Taylor McLaughlin scored 17 points to lead Bacon Academy to a 44-29 win over East Lyme in an ECC Large Division game. Jenna Schumacher led East Lyme (15-3, 7-3) with 13 points.

    • Darneshia Cantey had 12 points as Whitney Tech of Hamden beat Norwich Tech, 27-12, in the Constitution State Conference. Tyra Wolchesky had four points for Norwich Tech (2-17).

    • Williams School lost to St. Andrew's, 45-27. Marion Philippe had nine points and five rebounds, Kailah Waheed had eight rebounds and Maggie Hillegass had six rebounds and six steals for Williams (5-9).

    College wrestling

    • Marc Wagner (184), heavyweight Mark Howard and Nate and Mike Giorgio (133 and 141 pounds, respectively) all won for Coast Guard in its 26-15 loss to Merchant Marine. Coast Guard is 4-9.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • East Lyme's Wade McNamara scored a game-high 26 points, but the Vikings lost to Bacon 63-55 win over East Lyme in an ECC Large Division game. Kevin Foster scored eight for East Lyme (3-14, 0-9).

    • Troy-Pierre Louis scored 34 points to lead Rocky Hill (R.I.) to a 57-49 win over Williams School. Drew Watson led Williams (3-10) with 16 points.

    H.S. swimming

    • Williams School lost to Moses Brown, 53-31. Caius Mergy won the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley and Adam Collins won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle for Williams. The 200 freestyle relay team of Mergy, Sam Buffum, Collins and Samantha Linhares also won for Williams.

    Men's basketball

    • Northfield-Mt. Hermon beat St. Thomas More 78-72. Duane Notice scored 21 points and had seven rebounds and Marquis Moore scored 10 for T-More (23-4).

    H.S. hockey

    • Eddie Bates scored a pair of goals as Rockville-Bolton-Coventry-Lyman beat NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon Academy 2-0. Evan Callahan (13) and Jonah Beauton combined for 18 saves for NFA-St. Bernard (6-9).
